It's often suggested that life's biggest obstacle is finding your purpose. At some point you hit that road block, why I am here? Some people just know when their a kid, for others it take's a lifetime of trials and tribulations before one can reach true realization. Yet, the challenge of life only begins once you find your calling. For some the risk of pursuing your dream trigers fear and alters your judgement, but there are those who live off their instincts, but rather than play life as a crap shoot they find a balance in which to pursue their dreams and maintain a healthy lifestyle. LA based Serenita clothing was started by one of these dreamers, who also happens to be one of our close friends. Brian Bolton, Bay area native, moved to Los Angeles 7 years ago, with a dream, passion and drive. He rarely ever looks back(except when he misses his mom). We've had the chance to watch Brian and his brand grow over the year, so we sat down and talked to him about what's brought him to this point and what he and Serenita have dreamed up for the future.. Prelude: Brian insisted on using smiley faces in his interview.
1. What got you into the creative arts and the world of fashion?
I guess my imagination. I was never a bad student in school, I've just always been more of a day dreamer and art became the outlet for me to express my daydreams. 2. Was Serenita something you've been thinking about for a while? Serenita the name wasn't but doing a t-shirt line was always on my mind. I'm a strong believer that a name is a huge part of a company. If you have a meaningless name then your company is prolly shitty and Meaningless. Serenita is Italian for serenity and peace. That resignated with me for a while. I needed peace in my life at the time when I started the line and I was dealing with a lot personally, I was hoping by puttingall my energy into the line it would help me achieve peace in my life. More importantly though I intend on creating a charity called Serenita where I'd like to sponsor a person a month who needs help. It would be great for each seasons artwork to tell a story about the person Serenita sponsored. I've always dreamed of changing the world one person at a time and this way I can upgrade people's style and a persons life :) 3. Going off the designs from your first drop with Serenita, you seem to have an affinity fro Hollywood and Partying. Was that catalyst in your inspirations for your the line? I can't lie booze and partying definitely played a part. Some how I seem to come up with clever and funny shit when I'm under the influence. If I still like them when I'm sober then I know it was meant to be and I make the shirt. Like the "To Love and Die in LA " shirt, I came up with while enjoying a blunt listening to Tupac. It was a truly magical moment. It started with me asking myself why do people even wear those "I Love NY" shirt and why doesn't LA have a shirt, then Tupac ,"To Live and Die in LA" came on and that was that. 4.Looking into the crystal ball what do you see in-store for Serenita in the future? Hmm.. I see my clothing in stores.(softbody laugh) I'm really looking forword to starting the charity and just watching Serenita grow. Everything else I'll leave to fate. 5. Let's not forget about your T.V. show, Daddy's Girls, the girls have Pastries, can we expect to see Serenita featured on there this season?
Well I guess we'll havta see. ;) When the girls originally asked me to be on the show I didn't really see myself having a huge part in it, and I don't want Serenita to look like its piggybacking off the girls. Since the day I met them I always kinda felt like their LA brother from another. And on the show that's really all you'll see. The shows called daddys girls not Brians girls.(haha) That being said I don't think I'd even feel comfortable if I was on there promoting myself. I think now that people know me it makes more sense to see more of what I'm up to but like I said we'll see.
I plan on putting out a line under Serenita called Crooked Crows. Crooked Crows is definitely inspired more by urban culture compared to Serenita, that's kinda how I got the crows part, just the imagery and stigma that a crow represents holds pretty close to the world we live in today. The crooked part is straight from how fake and selfish people can be in this industry. Pretty straight forward. So yeah I'm looking forword to that and continuing to live the dream!
